The first time I watched the video, I told myself: ‘wow, that’s real sustainable procurement’.
First of all, it’s about microprocessors. Not office supplies, not paper or printers, but something that is at the heart of Intel’s business and identity.
Second, it talks about addressing a highly complex topic – Labour and Human Rights – in a highly complex industry – the Mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This required Intel to ‘reconnect the dots’ across the global supply chain (clause 5.4 of ISO 20400) and to engage with a multitude of partners to convince them to collaborate (clause 6.3). A massive program of work.
Third, this video is a piece of a broader information puzzle. Intel’s Conflict Free Minerals website provides a wealth of information about their program, including around their bag and tag system, third-party audits or their Conflict-Free Campus Initiative. Great stuff!
