Dr. Carsten Hansen is a sustainable procurement and supply chain specialist with more than 25 years of international experience across the United Nations, governments, international financial institutions, academia, and the private sector. He previously served as Chief of Global Procurement Services at the United Nations Development Programme, where he led a global procurement operation delivering more than USD 3 billion annually across over 170 countries. He also served as Co-Chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Working Group on Sustainable Procurement, helping to advance the integration of sustainability across procurement policies, tools, and decision-making throughout the United Nations system.
Today, Carsten is the Founder and Principal Consultant of SourcingHaus Research & Consulting Group, Director of the Sustainable Public Procurement Accelerator Lab at the Schulich School of Business, and a Visiting Research Fellow at Cranfield University. His work focuses on turning sustainable procurement principles into practical strategies, roadmaps, category approaches, supplier requirements, life-cycle costing methods, and implementation tools. He has supported organisations in applying ISO 20400 to strengthen procurement governance, manage environmental and social risks, engage suppliers, reduce supply-chain emissions, and deliver wider organisational and public value.
Carsten is a published researcher, lecturer, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, and Certified Environmental, Social and Governance Analyst.
